Steve has been coaching youth athletic programs since 1997, beginning his career at Dallas Center-Grimes CSD and continuing at Waukee CSD since 2000. In addition to his school coaching experience, Coach Nepp has provided personal training for youth in hurdles, high jump, long jump, and speed and performance training.

Throughout his career, Steve has held various coaching roles in both cross country and track and field across multiple levels. In 2000, he launched the first-ever middle school cross country program at Waukee, which started with just seven participants and grew to over 45 boys and girls by the third year. Eventually, the program split, with Steve taking over the boys' team, leading them through 2017. Under his leadership, the boys' program thrived in the Central Iowa Metro League (CIML), winning multiple championships and securing runner-up positions. In 2014, Coach Nepp was honored with the Middle School Coach of the Year award by the Iowa Track Coaches Association.

In addition to his middle school success, Steve has served as an assistant coach for the Waukee Girls Timberline 8th grade cross country program from 2020 to 2024. He also coached at the Waukee High School level, assisting the boys' team during the 2018-2019 season. Since 1997, Steve has been involved in coaching track and field and cross country at various levels, with experience coaching both boys and girls in hurdles, jumps, sprints, and distance events.
